It's a wrap: Sox fall to Royals in Konerko's final game
The White Sox lost their final game of the regular season Sunday, a 6-4 decision to the Royals at U.S. Cellular Field.
The big story, of course, was Paul Konerko playing his final game for the Sox before heading into retirement.
Konerko appeared to still be emotionally drained from Saturday night's rousing pregame ceremony, and he was 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts before being removed from the game in top of the sixth inning.
Konerko, who played 16 seasons for the White Sox, received a standing ovation from the crowd of 32,266 as he walked off the field, and a curtain call after he reached the dugout.
"It was a really moving night," Sox general manager Rick Hahn said of Konerko's retirement ceremony Saturday. "I think it was very well handled by everyone involved, the game operations department, marketing, PR and especially Paul and Jerry (Reinsdorf) and each of the speakers. I think it was a moving and appropriate tribute to an extremely important figure in White Sox history."
On Sunday, the Sox were trailing 2-0 in the third inning before Marcus Semien tied it with a 2-run homer off K.C. starter Yordano Ventura.
Josh Phegley had an RBI double in the fourth and Semien drew a bases-loaded walk to give the White Sox a 4-2 lead, but the Royals took the lead for good with 3 runs in the sixth inning.
Check back later for more on Konerko and the end of the Sox' season.
