Learn about Cub Scouting at free Fun Day

Can you catch a fish without bait? Find out at the Fishing Information Station at the free Cub Scout Fun Day Saturday, Sept. 27, at Half Day Forest Preserve on Milwaukee Avenue in Vernon Hills.

Sponsored by the Northeast Illinois Council's Aptakisic District, the half-day event offers information stations to guide Tiger, Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts through advancement requirements. Cub Scouts will learn new skills like knot tying, carving, hiking, proper flag folding and other outdoor informational activities.

From nature hikes to scaling mountains, Boy Scouts of America offers a range of outdoor exploration opportunities and training for first aid, camping and an appreciation for the environment. The program begins in first grade with Tiger Scouts and progresses through the Cub Scout program with Wolf, Bear and Webelos, and then to Boy Scouts.

Eagle Scout CJ Byrd, 14, of Hawthorn Woods said his interest in the outdoors began in Scouting.

"I know that I will always have a deep love and passion for outdoor activities in any place or setting. My prior experiences bring to light the need to protect the outdoors for the enjoyment of future generations."

Cub Scout Fun Day opens at 10 a.m. at Half Day Forest Preserve's Shelter A and continues until 2 p.m. Bring a sack lunch. Parents are welcome to attend and learn out about the Cub Scout program. Register online at neic.org/2014aptcubfunday or call (847) 748-9157.
