Barrington shuts down Prospect

Hans Pallan and Peyton Mohr each struck twice before the half hour to help Barrington finish off an undermanned club from Prospect 5-1 on Wednesday night in Mt. Prospect.

The Pallan-Morh tandem duo did the majority of the damage for the Broncos (6-4-0, 2-1-0); Ian Ford rounded out the scoring eight minutes into the second period before most of the Broncos' starting lineup came off the field for good.

Then Barrington saw its bid for a shutout dashed in the 73rd minute.

"We've been having trouble scoring for most of the season, especially last night when we could have used a goal or two against Buffalo Grove," said Barrington captain Casey Slingo, who recorded helpers on Pallan's opener as well as Ford's goal. "But it was great putting a few in tonight, and hopefully it will help with our confidence in finding the back of the net."

The Broncos responded well after dropping a 2-1 match at Buffalo Grove on Tuesday evening.

MSL West co-leaders Conant and Palatine played to a draw On Tuesday against Wheeling and Hersey respectively.

"Our mood before our game with Buffalo Grove was very good, but it quickly fell after they got that second goal," Slingo said. "And we never got ourselves back up again after that.

"That's why this game was so important for us and I thought guys like Hans and Austin (Grzebieniak) were key to our success."

The Knights (1-9-1, 0-2-1) have been snakebit all season with a rash of injuries.

They lost two players during a 1-0 loss to Hoffman Estates on Tuesday, stretching an already thin bench to its limit.

"It's tough what they have gone through so far but credit Jason (Cohen, Prospect coach) for keeping them together and playing hard," said Barrington coach Scott Steib. "They played hard right to the very end when they ruined our bid for a shutout."

Pallan ran onto a Slingo corner and redirected past keeper Peter Flynn at three minutes.

Mohr finished a well-executed sequence which began with Giles Phillips, who played through Pallan and then Grzebieniak before the junior finished in close at eight minutes.

"You can't open up like we did - not winning any 50-50 or second balls, self-destructing in our own end and giving up four goals all from just 6 yards away," said Cohen, who had six players in street clothes at the opening whistle.

Kyle Owen provided Pallan with the opportunity to find the far inside netting with his angled strike in the 13th minute. Mohr sent the Broncos into the break with a 4-goal advantage after his 29th minute tally.

Ross LaCamera, clearly the Knights' most dangerous attacker, was set free in the 11th minute and also four minutes later. He missed on both chances although his second attempt was pulled nicely out of the air by the Broncos keeper Alex Ruffalo, who was in full extension to his right.

Ruffalo was unable to stop LaCamera late when the junior steered in a corner from Maciel Lojewski.

"It was good to see Ross rewarded for a his strong effort tonight," Cohen said. "But again, we've got to come ready to play, especially against a team like Barrington which brought forth a lot of effort and is well-coached as well."

Steib said there was a lot of good that came out of this game for his unit.

"But we would have liked to have kept them out of the back of the net to get Alex his shutout." he added. "That would have been only our second of the year."

The Broncos will travel to Freeport for a tournament this weekend while the Knights travel to Warren on Saturday for a 2 p.m. match.
