One horse escapes, two die in Kane County barn fire

Two horses died in a barn fire Friday afternoon in an unincorporated area near Elgin, but another horse escaped and survived, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.

Undersheriff Pat Gengler said the cause is under investigation, but it could have been related to the severe weather affecting the Elgin area Friday.

"It could very well be a storm-related situation," Gengler said. "That whole area got hit pretty bad."

Emergency personnel, including firefighters from Pingree Grove and several other area departments, were dispatched to the barn at 9N067 Corron Road around 2:40 p.m. and remained on the site until 7:30 p.m.

There were three horses inside the barn, which was a total loss, Gengler said. Two, named Ghost and Buddy, died in the blaze. Another horse, Maverick, was able to escape. There were no other animals in the barn at the time of the fire, and no people were hurt.
