Church must be more transparent

I am so glad to have seen your Aug. 24 editorial regarding the reinstitution of Joseph Wilk, a priest in Schaumburg. Often we who work for the cause of survivors of abuse get very frustrated with the limited coverage from the Chicago media, but our hats are off to you for bringing additional attention to what the Archdiocese of Chicago has done and failed to do. You are so right to point out the obligation of the archdiocese to make public the reason for Wilk's confirmation as a priest in good standing.

Why does Jan Slattery in Mr. Peterson's article say "they" have no obligation to inform the public? So much for transparency and accountability.

I differ with your statement that the archdiocese has "made real efforts to shed light on its own past, owning up to abusive priests." It is imperative to remember that the archdiocese did none of that without being pressured by our legal system.
