Teen builds fence for school's garden as part of Eagle Scout project

Mechanics Grove Elementary School now has a fence to protect its vegetables from animals thanks to Tyler Marx, who built the structure as part of his Eagle Scout project through Santa Maria Boy Scout Troop 195.

Tyler, 16, a former Mechanics Grove student saw the need to protect the vegetable garden and offered his services. He is expected to get his Eagle Scout status by the end of the year or early 2015. Tyler is a sophomore at Mundelein High School.

Tyler also helped the school multiply its vegetable garden by harvesting through a gardening method know as Bartholomew. This method minimizes weed growth and increases efficiency in the garden, said Kathleen Miller, Mechanics Grove principal.

Miller said she plans to involve the students in third through fifth grades in the project by helping them plant and maintain the garden over the summer months.

"This will teach children healthy eating habits and how to create sustainable gardens that provide healthy organic crops that also taste delicious," she said.
