EPA: Gas station leak got into Lisle sewer system
SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is seeking enforcement action against a gas station that leaked fuel into sanitary sewers in Lisle.
The leak was reported to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday. It came from beneath a dispenser island at an ExxonMobil gas station that's owned by Buchanan Energy.
EPA officials want Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office to obtain an order requiring the company to control the release and clean up contamination.
State officials said Thursday that an environmental contractor is pumping fuel from the sanitary sewer and a dispenser sump, and flushing the storm and sanitary sewers with thousands of gallons of water to reduce vapors.
A Buchanan Energy spokesman says the company is working with the station operator to resolve the problem.
