Dundee Rotary Club awards Chris Nelson Service Above Self Award
The Dundee Township Rotary Club recognized Chris Nelson, village president of West Dundee, with the club's special "Service Above Self" Award at its meeting on June 10, held at Emmett's, 128 Main St. in West Dundee.
The Service Above Self Award is presented annually to only one individual, and is the also highest honor a local Rotary Chapter can bestow upon a member of the local community.
"Our club is pleased to honor Chris for his commitment and dedicated service to our community," said Erik Gullickson, president of the Dundee Township Rotary Club. "With his responsibilities to the Village of West Dundee and his professional career, he embodies the object of Rotary, which is to encourage and foster the ideal of service."
Curt McReynolds, Service Above Self Award chairman and president-elect of the Dundee Township Rotary Club, added "Chris has initiated innovative projects and is very supportive of the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township. He is dedicated to making our community a better place to live and work."
Nelson serves at Comcast as Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs for the Greater Chicago Region. Having been with the company since 2003, he coordinates relations between Comcast and communities in the North and Northwest suburbs of Chicago, in addition to a multitude of legislative districts.
He has been involved in a number of notable projects, including participating in the merger of Comcast and NBC Universal in 2011 and the ongoing merger with Time Warner Cable in 2014. Nelson is a board member of the Dundee Township Boys and Girls Club, the Northern Illinois University Alumni Association, and the NIU Political Science Department Advisory Commission. He is the president of the Grand Pointe Meadows Homeowners Association. In 2013, he was selected as a Fellow for World Business Chicago, the economic development arm of the city of Chicago.
A native of the Chicago area, Christopher received both his Bachelor of Arts Degree and Master's in Municipal Management from Northern Illinois University.
The Rotary Club of Dundee Township received nominations for the "Service Above Self" Awards from members of the Club and the community. Requirements included that nominees must be a resident of Dundee Township and that, individually or through their businesses, do something of value or merit, or make a contribution of significance to the community where they live or work.
The main objective of Rotary International is service, in the community, and throughout the world. As volunteers, Rotarians build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. There are 1.2 million Rotarians in more than 31,000 clubs in more than 163 countries.
There are currently 34 members of the Dundee Township Rotary Club who represent a cross-section of business and professional backgrounds.
