Building makeover in Vernon Hills:

An aging office building on a prominent corner in Vernon Hills near the Westfield Hawthorn shopping center will be revamped as part of a long-term investment. The Centrum Partners proposal for a makeover of 1980s-era two-story building and site at Milwaukee Avenue and Route 60 to include metal and glass paneling and upgraded landscaping was informally supported Tuesday by the village board. Centrum's earlier proposal to replace the building with two smaller structures, one of which would have been a medical office building, was rejected as trustees said they would hold out for more sales tax producing uses. The revised proposal would include Northwestern Medicine as a tenant, but would create room for a large tenant, perhaps a ground-floor restaurant, according to Centrum. "This is a lot better. I can see this improving the value of that corner," Trustee Jim Schultz said. It plan was forwarded to the village's planning and zoning commission for consideration in advance of an official board vote.
