Elgin teen charged in beating death
An 18-year-old Elgin woman has been charged in the November beating death of a teenage woman from the same city, police said. The fight was over a guy, according to Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault.
Chante Butler turned herself in Wednesday, May 21, and was charged with both aggravated battery in a public place and with unlawful restraint.
This activity was prompted by the death of 19-year-old T'Keyah Marshall, whose family found her unresponsive in her bed on Nov. 8, police said.
Elgin police and fire personnel responded to the home that day and took Marshall to Presence St. Joseph Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During the subsequent investigation, police said they learned Marshall had an argument with Butler four days earlier that escalated into a fight in the 300 block of Hill Avenue.
Both of the teens knew each other and during the fight, Butler pushed Marshall to the ground, repeatedly kicked and punched her in the face and never allowed her to get up, police said.
A warrant was issued for Butler's arrest May 1.
She was transferred to the Kane County jail and is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail.
