Twenty preschoolers combined some basic scientific concepts with literature Tuesday during the Vernon Area Public Library's Preschool Science Detectives program.
"Today we're doing butterflies and the life cycle of butterflies," youth services librarian Lisa Coleman said. "We're going to have a couple of stories and a craft. What we like to do is encourage kids to learn about the world around them,"
Coleman read from two books, "Butterflies," and "Bob and Otto," a story about a butterfly and his friend a caterpillar. The program ended with the children coloring butterflies.
Christina Fejes of Lincolnshire attended the program with her 4-year-old son, Henry.
"He's preschool age but doesn't attend a preschool, so it's good to get him out and socialize with other kids. We've gone to six or seven of these programs already this year," Fejes said.
Holly Aronoff of Vernon Hills, who participated in the program with her 3-year-old daughter, Celia, said, "When we first signed up for it, it sounded like a lot of fun, in tune with spring."
