Dancing, music, stories highlight CLC's Cinco de Mayor celebration in Waukegan
Brightly colored flowing skirts twirled in the courtyard on Genesee Street and Madison Avenue in Waukegan as the College of Lake County hosted its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration Thursday at its Lake Shore campus.
The festival featured traditional Mexican dancers from Miguel Juarez and Abbott middle schools in Waukegan. Music was provided by DJ David Olivares, and Cinco de Mayo stories were told by Lakeshore Campus Student Association members.
Community members were invited to the free celebration, which included a Taste of Lakeshore buffet.
Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken as Mexican Independence Day, but it celebrates the Mexican victory over a much larger French army that took place in Puebla in 1862. The victory serves as a source of pride for Mexicans and is celebrated May 5.
CLC's Cinco de Mayo celebration is sponsored by the Lakeshore Campus Student Association.
