George to hold Mass to mark canonizations

Cardinal Francis George plans to celebrate a special Mass in honor of the canonization of two well-loved popes, John Paul II and John XXIII.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has scheduled the Mass for 5:15 p.m. Sunday at the city's Holy Name Cathedral.

Other events include a vigil and a procession. Pope John Paul II visited Five Holy Martyrs Parish in 1979; the Chicago parish is hosting a vigil starting just after midnight Sunday morning. The vigil will include prayer, music, poems and a telecast of the canonization from Rome at 3 a.m.

A pilgrimage in honor of the canonization will begin at Holy Trinity Polish Mission at 9:30 a.m. Sunday and continue toward St. Hyacinth Basilica in Chicago. It will conclude with a Mass at 12:30 p.m.
