Handgun found near Streamwood High School
A Streamwood High School student is in custody after police recovered a handgun just outside the grounds of the school in a residential area Friday, authorities said.
School officials were alerted Friday afternoon of rumors in a classroom of a gun being brought to the school, police said in a news release.
The school was placed on lockdown about 2:30 p.m. as a precautionary measure while a search was conducted using K-9 units, police said. The lockdown was lifted about 3:50 p.m.
Students are normally released from the school day an hour earlier.
Officers are conducting interviews and will be consulting with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office regarding criminal charges, police said.
