Schaumburg transportation director retiring

Schaumburg's Director of Transportation June Johnson announced her retirement Thursday, effective May 27.

Johnson began her career as a traffic engineer with the village in 1993 in the planning department. In 2003, she was promoted from senior transportation engineer to director of the transportation department.

Among her current responsibilities, Johnson is coordinating with the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority and Cook County on a long-awaited full interchange at Roselle Road and a crucial new partial interchange at Meacham Road.

She and her husband plan on traveling for the next few years before settling down in their retirement.

In a statement released Thursday, Johnson wrote, "While I am looking ahead to spending time with my husband and traveling, it is never easy to leave somewhere that has felt like home for 20 years. I thank the village for the many opportunities that I have had here and will miss the many friendships that have made at the village. I am proud of the work I have accomplished and the people that I have worked alongside of in the community."

Schaumburg has begun the recruitment process for a new director of transportation. The search expected to take three to four months.
