Carrollton, Annawan to meet for Class 1A title

McKenzie Ruyle made a free throw with 40 seconds to play to break a 38-38 tie, then made another with 24 seconds left, as Carrollton held off Moweaqua Central A & M 40-38 in the first Class 1A girls basketball state semifinal at Redbird Arena in Normal Friday.

A & M missed a layup to tie and a 3-point attempt to win in the final 10 seconds.

Maddie Struble led Carrollton (25-6) with 19 points and 17 rebounds, while Madison Mountain added 12 points and 8 rebounds for the Hawks.

Jordan Taylor had 20 points to lead A & M (27-6).

Annawan 71, Lanark Eastland 45: Celina VanHyfte scored 18 points and Annawan ran out to an 18-4 lead after one quarter and a 42-16 advantage at halftime to cruise to a win in the second Class 1A semifinal.

Cierra Davis added 15 points and Morgan VanHyfte had 13 for the Bravettes (29-4).

Lexia Macomber led Lanark Eastland (28-6) with 12 points.
