Five people charged in two Carpentersville home burglaries
Carpentersville police Tuesday arrested four men and a juvenile in connection with two separate home burglaries.
One burglary was halted because of an alert neighbor who called police; another was solved by detectives checking out an Elgin pawnshop for stolen goods, police said.
The first burglary was reported at 4:30 p.m. Sunday when residents of a home on the 100 block of Pueblo Road returned home and found their 50-inch television and other items missing, Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart said.
Detectives began checking area pawnshops. A television had earlier been sold to one pawnshop and the owner showed police other items that were pawned — such as a watch and jewelry — the victims confirmed were stolen.
Pawnshop owners are required by law to make copies of identification of anyone who pawns an item.
“Fortunately, they had the IDs of the guys. It led us back to them and they were charged with the burglary (on Tuesday),” Bosshart said.
Charged with felony burglary were: Frankie Rivera, 18, of the 100 block of Ensenada Road, and Kevin Arriaga, 19, of the 1200 block of Waco Lane, both of Carpentersville.
In the second case, police got a call at 11 a.m. Tuesday from a neighbor who saw two people climbing through a ground-floor window at a home in the 200 block of Ensenada Drive, Bosshart said.
A 15-year-old Elgin juvenile was caught inside the home. Fabian Pena, 20, of the 1300 block of Todd Farm Road, Elgin, was caught coming out of the window, and Jonathan M. Castaneda-Diaz, 22, of the 600 block of Crystal Street, Elgin, ran from police but was caught before he could leave the home's yard, Bosshart said.
“The neighbors noticed suspicious activity,” said Bosshart, adding the three tried to steal $400, an iPod and a Belkin radio.
All four men were being held at the Kane County jail and are due in court March 5. They each face between four and 15 years in prison if convicted, but probation is an option.
The juvenile was taken to the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles and his case will be dealt with in juvenile court.
