Fire leaves Wheaton home uninhabitable, residents escape safely

A single-family home in Wheaton was rendered uninhabitable after a fire ripped through it early Sunday, the Wheaton Fire Department said.

Firefighters were called to 1228 S. Gammon Road about 2 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived on the scene, the attached garage was in flames and the blaze had already reached the second floor of the building, according to a news release from the fire department.

The home was occupied when the fire started, but everyone got out safely, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

It took about 20 minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control. After that, crews took care of hot spots inside the home and treated vehicles in the driveway that had caught fire, authorities said.

Investigators continue to try to establish a cause. A damage estimate for the home, which was declared uninhabitable by the Wheaton Building Department, was not available Sunday, authorities said.
