Township fair can help guide teens in job search
Filling out applications, writing resumes and polishing interview skills are challenging tasks for many teens, who are new at the job search game. To help simplify the process and provide opportunities, the Schaumburg Township District Library has scheduled a Teen Job Fair from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, in the Rasmussen Room on the second floor.
Teens ages 15 to 19 are invited to drop in. Representatives from local companies interested in hiring teens will be on hand with information and applications. Before meeting with them, however; attendees may want to talk with experts, who will be available to help with resume writing and interview skills. They will answer teens' individual questions, and also give talks on the following topics:
An overview of the job search process will be presented by Bob Podgorski of St. Hubert's Job Ministry from 1-1:15 p.m. This will be repeated at 3 p.m.
Interview do's and don'ts, along with filling out online job applications, will be covered by a representative from Illinois workNet from 1:30-1:45 p.m. This will be repeated at 3:30 p.m.
Creating an effective and noticeable resume will be explained by a representative of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission from 2-2:15 p.m.
The online job search will be presented by STDL Business Liaison Librarian Patti Smolin from 2:30-2:45 p.m. She will help teens tailor job searches to meet their skills and desired types of employment.
Additionally, organizations that accept teen volunteers will have representatives available to speak with attendees.
"This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for our township's teens," said Teen Librarian Katie LaMantia. "There are a lot of teens looking for jobs, so getting an edge on the competition is always a good idea. Our speakers and other professionals will provide great tips and answer any questions the teens might have."
Employers participating in the Teen Job Fair will include (but not be limited to) the library, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Pandora Jewelry, Schaumburg Park District, Schaumburg Boomers, Hands On Suburban, Menchie's Frozen Yogurt, Pirates' Cove Children's Theme Park, Northwest Special Recreation Association, St. Hubert's Job Ministry, and the Army Reserve.
No registration or fee is required for the job fair. Teens can simply drop in anytime from 1-4 p.m. to gather information, work on resumes, and talk with the speakers. Applications will be available to fill out at the library or take home.
