Aurora literacy center seeks donations on #GivingTuesday

Give to Aurora's Dominican Literacy Center on #GivingTuesday Nov. 29.

That's the invitation from Sister Kathleen Ryan, center director. She invites area residents to donate by visiting Dominicanliteracycenter.org/donations and clicking on "Donate Now."

The center, at 240 Vermont Ave. in Aurora, helps immigrant women to learn to read, write and speak English through free instruction by volunteers.

#GivingTuesday is a national social movement inspiring people to give back after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone.

Sister Kathleen said, "Please help women and their families learn English by donating $25, $50, $100 or your desired amount.

"Donations will help us provide CDs, ESL and other library books and computer software for women who are striving to learn English."

She said a $100 donation will buy books for a student and a tutor for a year.

The Dominican Literacy Center is a nonprofit built to inspire and motivate. Women come to the center to learn English through the help of volunteer tutors.

Basement classes started at St. Nicholas Church in Aurora. After a year, the center needed more space and found a new home at its current location. Through the hard work and dedication of Dominican sisters, other board members as well as tutors, the center continues in their efforts to help serve the community in the most caring way. The center relies on donations to function. Donations enable women and their families to grow and participate in their communities. Donations also will give the women the necessary resources and tools to learn English as efficiently as possible.

#GivingTuesday is a 24-hour online campaign that began in 2012, dedicated to encouraging people to make donations to charities, volunteer and generally support philanthropic efforts. Good deeds and inspiration for giving are spread through the hashtag on Twitter, and curated on the organization's website, www.givingtuesday.org.
