Algonquin library to celebrate and honor veterans this month

The Algonquin Area Public Library District invites the community to join them in honoring and celebrating veterans and their families at several events this month.

On Veterans Day, join a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, outside the front entrance of the Algonquin Area Public Library, 2600 Harnish Drive, Algonquin. Residents are invited to participate as members of Lake in the Hills American Legion Post 1231 present the parade of colors. This Veterans Day ceremony is an opportunity to meet those who have served in the United States Armed Forces and thank them for their service.

At 7 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 18, the library will welcome Colonel Jill Morgenthaler, U.S. Army (Ret.), presenting "From the Battlefield to the Boardroom." A popular, engaging speaker, Colonel Morgenthaler is the author of "The Courage to Take Command: Leadership Lessons from a Military Trailblazer." One of the first women to enter ROTC and train as an equal with men, Colonel Morgenthaler was the first woman battalion commander in the 88th Regional Support Command and the first woman brigade commander in the 84th Division. She is also a Bronze Star and Legion of Merit recipient. She will inspire both mature adults and millennials with her stories of leadership and courage during her 30 years in the military. Registration is required for this event. Visit www.aapld.org/events.

Through December, the Harnish Main Library galleries will feature selections from the "Portraits of American Veterans Project," the inspirational artwork of Algonquin artist Jeanine Hill-Soldner. This exhibit incorporates original oil paintings of local American Veterans with their photographs, memorabilia, and stories. Paintings can be viewed on the library's main level in the common areas near the reference desk.
