Osowski, Carmel in command
Anna Osowski led the way in the opening event for Carmel Catholic’s girls gymnastic team on Tuesday night.
Osowski soared through her bar routine making one of her best moves, a “bail,” look easier than expected. She finished the nearly flawless routine and was awarded top honors with a 9.4.
“I had a good performance,” said Oswowski of her move on the bars. “If you really stay tight and control your body, it’s pretty easy to do. You just have to stay with it. I have been doing it all season. The routine itself was probably one of my best routines. It was good that the team helped me at the end by cheering me on.”
The rest of the Carmel Catholic competitors followed the lead of Osowski for a season-best score of 142.2 in claiming the Deerfield regional championship. Host Deerfield finished second (131.125), Warren was third (124.025) followed by Highland Park (122.575).
“I think this was our best meet of the year,” Carmel Catholic coach Nicole Stroup said. “I think we’ve been working hard for this one. The girls went out there and did what they needed to do. We added a couple of things for the gymnasts. I’m happy to see them get through that.
“The girls are working hard for it. We’ve been really working on a lot of mental work with them. They’re believing in their capabilities, and I’ve been seeing it in a lot of practice lately.”
The Corsairs took the top three spots in the all-around led by Osowski (36.875), Antonia Durnil (35.55) and Alyssa Legeretta (35.425).
Legerreta and Osowski finished in a tie for first on balance beam as they each posted a 9.175.
“My teammates encouraged me and gave me the confidence,” said Legerreta, a freshman. “The team started out good on the beam, so I felt pretty good going into it. I was clean and was able to be focused.”
Osowski also placed first on floor (9.35) and tied for third with Highland Park’s Emily Ablin on vault (8.95).
Durnil finished in the top spot on vault with a 9.025. Madison Graff was second (9.0) and Colleen Kadowaki qualified fifth. She was in a tie with Warren’s Krya McCue at 8.55.
Durnil also was second on bars (8.9). third on floor (8.975) and fifth on beam (8.65). Legerreta was runner-up on floor (9.05) and placed fourth on bars (8.75). Graff also qualified on floor with a fifth-place 8.675.
Hannah Beyrer of Warren chalked up a third place on bars with a 8.85.
“I thought I had a good dismount,” said Beyrer, a freshman. “I’m happy with the routine.”
McCue also reached the sectional with a fourth-place finish on floor (8.70).
“Floor was one of my highest scores,” McCue said. “I wasn’t expect that too happen. I was hoping to do well on vault, since I made it to sectionals the last two years.
“The competition is tough out here. I expect the sectionals will be tougher to make it to state.”
