Snow could pay off for these customers

More than 200 customers are waiting to learn if enough snow fell for them to wind up with full refunds for their purchases as part of a Mundelein jewelry store’s promotion. P.K. Bennett Jewelers will return $151,000 if at least 3 inches of snow fell from midnight to noon yesterday at O’Hare International Airport. The customers joined the snow promotion by making purchases between Nov. 29 and Dec. 24. Full story.

A piece of Elgin history comes home

To the members of the Elgin Area Historical Society and Museum, it’s nothing short of serendipitous that an Elgin National Road Race trophy from 1912 is back in town. The so-called Illinois Cup won by racer Charles Merz is on display at the Elgin History Museum, along with Merz’s racing helmet and goggles, his World War II victory medal and pilot wings, and a few photographs, including one signed by legendary World World I pilot and race car driver Eddie Rickenbacker. Barrington bands in London

Rain pelted the Barrington High School Bronco Marching Band during its performance in London’s New Year’s Day Parade, but no one was complaining. On Sunday, the school’s symphonic concert band performed at London’s Cadogan Hall, the home of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as part of a gala music festival that is connected with the New Year’s celebration. The snow continues to fall throughout the suburbs this morning, and another 1-inch to 3-inches are expected to fall throughout the day. Temperatures will top out at 19 degrees this afternoon before falling back to zero tonight. Full weather.

Heavy snow is creating slippery conditions on area roadways, and people are urged to slow down. Construction continues on Rollins Road between Route 83 and Route 45. Delays are possible. People should find an alternate route. Full traffic.

Kaner going to the Olympics

Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane, as expected, was named to the U.S. Olympic team yesterday. But Brandon Saad and Nick Leddy did not make it and will have to wait their turn. Kane was one of the 14 forwards named to the squad that will be going to Sochi, Russia, looking to avenge its overtime loss to Canada in the 2010 gold-medal game in Vancouver. Stevenson grad makes women’s Olympic squad

Eleven returning Olympians are on the roster for the women’s hockey team that will represent the United States at Sochi. The roster, which includes 2009 Stevenson High School graduate and Buffalo Grove native Megan Bozek, was announced during the break between periods of the NHL’s Winter Classic. Full story.
