Jazz up your January by joining Naper Settlement for Downton Abbey-inspired activities

Are you a fan of the hit television drama Downton Abbey? Join other fans as Naper Settlement hosts three fun programs on Jan. 4, Jan. 28 and Feb. 22 exploring the passion, nobility, treachery and looming change from the Edwardian era through the 1920s.

“The fourth season is set in the 1920s, which was an exciting time in Britain and in the U.S.,” said Jenn Edginton, Learning Experiences Coordinator. “The Charleston was all the rage, jazz music was popular, and in the U.S., because of Prohibition, speakeasies were booming and bootleggers were notorious.”

On the eve of the fourth season premiere, enjoy an afternoon of Downton Abbey-inspired activities from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4. Sip tea and nibble on sweet treats while playing a rousing game of series trivia. Trivia teams are limited to four people; join as a team or as an individual. Get in the spirit of the day and wear your best hat, gloves and accessories, historic or contemporary.

The Tea & Talk Servant Tour that will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, focuses on Naper Settlement’s Martin Mitchell Mansion, built in 1883. Attendees will step back in time and behind-the-scenes to apply for a position at the Mansion. During this fictitious first-person tour, learn about the life of servants during the late Edwardian time period. Tour the kitchen and receive recipes from the Butler to practice at home. Learn from the Housekeeper how to properly set a table for tea. Tea and treats will be served.

The Tea & Talk Wrap Up program will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22. Enjoy tea and treats while playing trivia from the fourth season and speculate on what’s to come next for Downton. Trivia teams are limited to four people; join as a team or as an individual. Feel free to get into the spirit of the day and wear your best 1920s accessory.
