Lake Zurich high classroom evacuated after pepper spray released
Two Lake Zurich High School students were taken to a hospital Friday after someone released pepper spray or a similar chemical in a classroom, authorities said.
The teens, both girls, were taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital near Barrington because they were coughing a little more than the other people in the room, Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Wheelock said. Neither was critically injured, he said.
About 30 other teens and a teacher were evaluated and released.
The potentially painful spray was released about 2:30 p.m., and it was contained to one class, Wheelock said.
Students in the classroom were moved to an area with fresher air, he said.
Lake Zurich police are investigating. They believe the chemical was sprayed into the air and not specifically at anyone.
No arrests have been made.
