St. Raymond School students climb on board the Freedom Express

In October, St. Raymond School had a visit from the Freedom Express, a traveling museum that gives students an opportunity to explore their First Amendment freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition through interactive exhibits and artifacts.

The Robert R. McCormick Foundation provides this museum, on wheels, free to schools in the Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will county areas.

The Freedom Express parked just steps outside the classrooms in the St. Raymond parking lot. Students in grades six through eight were able to hear members of the founding generation debate the protection of individual rights; examine the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights; deliver their own rulings in five Supreme Court cases; and investigate the censorship of music, art, film and literature.

The event was arranged by St. Raymond teachers Mellissa Porcaro and Robin Virgil.
