U.S. District Judge to Visit Butterfield School Students

U.S. District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan will talk to Butterfield third-graders about the U.S. Constitution and citizenship on Dec. 13 and hold a mock citizenship swearing-in ceremony.

The Honorable Der-Yeghiayan, a federal judge for the Northern District of Illinois and the first Armenian immigrant federal judge in the United States, will talk to students at 11 a.m. at the school, 1441 W. Lake St., Libertyville.

“The third-graders are involved in a six week unit on immigration,” said teacher Kim Zilch. “They learn about the immigration experience by participating in an “Experiential Exercise.” They explore why people immigrate, the challenges the immigrants face in getting to the United States, and some of the drawbacks of life as an immigrant. We have invited Judge Der-Yeghiayan to do a mock presentation of a real swearing-in ceremony and answer questions regarding the ceremony or immigration to give the kids and teachers a more real experience. We are all looking forward to it.”
