Recycling Programs Make Helping the Environment Easy

West Chicago, Illinois: November 26, 2013 - The upcoming holidays bring a couple of great recycling opportunities spearheaded by the West Chicago Environmental Commission. A post-Thanksgiving cooking oil collection event on November 30, 2013 in the City Hall parking lot from 9:00 a.m. - noon helps residents safely dispose of their used cooking oil, which will be processed into environmentally friendly bio-fuel by Green Grease Environmental.

Also, strands of incandescent and LED holiday lights and household extension cords in any condition are being collected in recycling containers at the following locations beginning December 2, 2013 through January 24, 2014:

Murphy Ace Hardware, 319 South Neltnor Boulevard (Route 59)

First United Methodist Church of West Chicago, 643 East WashingtonStreet

West Chicago Public Library, 118 West Washington Street

West Chicago City Hall, 475 Main Street

West Chicago Water Treatment Plant, 1400 West Hawthorne

For electronics disposal, residents are reminded that since January 1, 2012, landfills are no longer able to accept electronic waste. This includes televisions, computers, VCRs and more. Do not leave these items at the curb. The City of West Chicago has contracted with Groot Industries, Inc. to provide residents with free drop-off of electronic waste at its e-waste facility located at 1995 Powis Road on Saturdays, from 7:00 a.m. - noon. Contact Groot at (877) 775-1200 with questions. Additionally, Sims Recycling Solutions, at 1600 Harvester Road, will accept residential electronics for recycling at no charge during normal business hours, Mondays – Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. For more information, call Sims at (630) 231-6060.
