Wheaton mom rounds up help for tornado victims
After the devastating tornado in central Illinois on Sunday, Jennifer Guevara somehow wanted to help the victims.
So she took to social media. On a Facebook page she manages in which Wheaton parents share ideas, help and such, she put out a call for items that were needed in Coal City.
People responded quickly and soon her living room was filled with clothes, food, baby items and toiletries.
On Thursday, with the help of her mom and sister, she packed up a U-Haul, donated by Chuck Pickerill of Villa Park, and drove the items to Coal City.
Toiletries and main essentials were delivered to United Methodist Church and clothes were taken to a nearby clothes closet in Coal City.
Other local businesses helped her out, too, including Vanilla Sugar Bakery of Winfield, which sent cookies for the Coal City volunteers, and Bruce Wisner, orthodontist in Wheaton, who donated dental items.
Guevara wants people to know that by making a small steps, individuals can help out just as much as a business or organization can.
“It’s very rewarding in so many ways.” Guevara said. “I live in such an amazing community, here in Wheaton. I feel very fortunate to live here.”
