St. Vincent de Paul, Wauconda students provide essentials to families in need

CHICAGO, IL, Nov. 21, 2013 — Frassati Catholic Academy in Wauconda hosted a drive to benefit the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The drive called, Students Provide Essentials — Fall Clean Up, was sponsored by Frassati's Mission Club (a potential Young Vincentians group) and collected items that are not available for purchase through food stamps for needy families.

According to a 2011 report by Heartland Alliance, 1/3 of Illinois residents live in or on the brink of poverty. Basic living essentials are not covered by “Food Stamps”.

Three very energetic and smart 7th grade girls, Emily Karr, Natalie Williams and Mary Margaret Galuska, run the Frassati Mission club. They are just starting the mission club this year. “We love the affiliation with St. Vincent de Paul and are interested in making the club a young Vincentian group,” said Emily Karr.

On November 15, students sorted and packed more than 107 bags containing necessities not available through food stamps such as paper towels, toilet paper, dish soap and detergent. Bags were divided between three SVdP conferences: Santa Maria del Popolo in Mundelein, St. Mary of the Annunciation in Fremont Center, and Transfiguration in Wauconda.

The Wauconda Township Food Pantry shelves will be stocked from the bags they receive from Transfiguration and client friends of Santa Maria del Popolo and St. Mary of the Annunciation will be blessed with the extra items along with their bountiful Thanksgiving baskets.

Frassati is a Roman Catholic Middle School of the Archdiocese of Chicago sponsored by three parishes: Santa Maria del Popolo in Mundelein, St. Mary of the Annunciation in Fremont Center, and Transfiguration in Wauconda.
