Parking Fees at Schaumburg Commuter Lot Increase

Beginning January 1, 2014, parking fees at the Schaumburg Commuter Lot will increase as follows:

• Daily parking fees will increase from $1.25 to $1.50

• Monthly permits from $21/month to $26/month

• Quarterly permits from $53/quarter to $65/quarter

The Schaumburg Train Station has one of the highest numbers of daily boarding's along the Metra Milwaukee District West Line. The village provides 1,267 parking spaces in the commuter parking lot located north of the station. Keeping the parking lot in a state of good repair, providing lighting for safety, snow plowing and salting the parking lot, and clearing snow and salting the pedestrian walkways are all part of the costs to maintain it. Revenue from parking fees is used to pay for its maintenance.

It is anticipated that the commuter parking lot will need to be completely reconstructed in 2025. The cost in 2025 dollars is estimated to be $2.6 million. To ensure funds are available for this major project, the village has been making incremental changes to the cost of the daily, monthly, and quarterly permits. The first increase occurred in December 2008; the second increase, scheduled for 2012 was deferred until January 2014 due to the poor economy and the desire to not burden customers during a difficult economic period. The village anticipates that continued strong use of the commuter lot will make up for the loss revenue between 2012 and 2014.
