Southwest Indiana county OKs moving Evansville war memorials
EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A southwestern Indiana county has approved plans to move several war memorials scattered around Evansville’s downtown area to a single site on the city’s riverfront.
The Vanderburgh County commissioners agreed Tuesday to allow the local Veterans Council to move the memorials, many of which it says are largely overlooked.
Veterans Council President Mark Acker says “people walk by them and they don’t know that they’re there.” The council began working more than two years ago to move the monuments to a site along the Ohio River city’s riverfront.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports a local contractor has volunteered to do all the work. The memorials slated for relocation include a Civil War bench, a World War I and World War II memorial and a Revolutionary War monument.
