Quincy mayor proposes privatizing garbage pickup

QUINCY, Ill. — The mayor of Quincy is suggesting that the western Illinois city privatize its garbage and recycling collection in an effort to save money.

Mayor Kyle Moore presented three proposals from private companies during a Tuesday news conference. Moore says privatization will save the city money over the next decade and let it spend on infrastructure improvements. The Quincy Herald-Whig reports the plans could cost residents more per month compared with current services.

The mayor says the change is necessary because the city may not be able to maintain its current system without more revenue.

The decision to change how the city collects trash and recycling is ultimately up to aldermen.
