Volunteers help seniors with raking leaves

West Chicago: November 5, 2013 - Two things are certain about autumn in West Chicago; falling leaves and neighbor helping neighbor.

This year's annual Senior Citizen Leaf Raking event brought out over 60 volunteers who assisted 30 senior households with, what for them was a massive task, raking and removing the leaves in their yards.

Coordinated by the West Chicago Police Department, many different groups answered the call to action and made the event held on Saturday, November 2, 2013 such a rousing success. Among those groups were the West Chicago Park District, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Glen Arbor Community Church, West Chicago High School Teachers Association, Fraternal Order of Police, West Chicago Fire Protection District, National Honor Society, West Chicago Community High School Horticulture Club, Mexican Cultural Center of DuPage, Girl Scouts and others.

According to Crime Prevention Officer Tony Quarto, who facilitated the event, "We experienced great weather and closed out the day with a pizza party for our volunteers. We thank everyone who participated." Officer Quarto also gave a shout-out to Menards of West Chicago, which donated all the yard waste bags for the event.
