St. Raymond volleyball teams host annual ‘Volley for the Cure’

To support National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade girls volleyball teams from St. Raymond School (Mount Prospect) hosted St. Anne (Barrington), St. Emily (Mount Prospect), The Willows Academy (Des Plaines) and St. Catherine Laboure School (Glenview) at its sixth annual “Volley for the Cure” volleyball fundraising event Friday, Oct. 4.

Organized by St. Raymond School parents Beth Menczywor and Karen Haaning, the event raised $1,290 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

“The ‘Volley for the Cure’ event was a huge success,” said Menczywor. “We raised almost $300 more this year than 2012. I am always amazed how easy it is to get volunteers for this event — it was well attended.

“I had several people whose lives had personally been affected by breast cancer tell me how truly touched they were that St. Raymond’s hosts this event. I feel ‘Volley for the Cure’ is a positive way to begin educating the girls on the importance of breast cancer awareness.”

According to Menczywor, the players provided competitive matches. St. Raymond’s seventh-grade girls Black volleyball team began the competition with a win over Willows Academy; St. Raymond’s sixth-grade girls then lost to St. Anne; St. Raymond’s seventh-grade girls White team then defeated their counterparts from St. Anne.

Later, St. Raymond’s eighth-grade White team won vs. St. Emily; and the event concluded with a St. Raymond eighth-grade Black team victory over St. Catherine.

St. Raymond’s seventh- and eighth-grade teams are divided into two equal teams due to the large number of girls participating.

At St. Raymond School that Friday, students were allowed to wear jeans to school and dress in pink. They brought in donations for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Prizes raffled off during the evening games included pink game balls, a pink products basket and a pink baked goods basket.

This year, for the first time, St. Raymond held a bake sale in conjunction with the event, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
