Chicago Master Singers perform Brahms and Rutter at Techny
Barrington-based Chicago Master Singers will open its 35th anniversary season with performances of three choral masterpieces by Johannes Brahms — “Schicksalslied,” “Begrabnisgesang” and “Triumphlied” — and John Rutter’s text-sensitive “Requiem.”
The concerts will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit, Society of the Divine Word, in Techny.
The 130-voice chorus under the direction of maestro Alan Heatherington will perform with the Ars Viva Orchestra. Guest soloists will be bass baritone Gerard Sundberg in the Brahms “Triumphlied” and soprano Michelle Areyzaga in the Rutter “Requiem.”
“Out of Death Comes Life” is the theme of this concert, with life-affirming music that resoundingly celebrates the victory of light over darkness and life over death. Music critic Dorothy Andries will deliver a free preconcert lecture about the music one hour before each performance.
The venue, a historic and resonant church, is located at 2001 Waukegan Road, just north of Willow Road, in Techny, which is between Northbrook and Glenview.
