Schaumburg man accused of stabbing puppy with spike

A 75-year-old Schaumburg man faces animal cruelty charges after authorities say he stabbed a 10-month-old puppy three times in the chest with a metal spike.

Cook County Judge Jill Cerone Marisie set bail at $10,000 Wednesday for Anthony Haynes, of the 100 block of Blackhawk Drive. She also ordered Haynes to surrender his weapons, have no contact with the dog's owners and to remain in Illinois.

According to Assistant State's Attorney Katherine Levine, Haynes began complaining about the dog's barking about three weeks ago. At one point, he told the owners he would kill the dog if the owners didn't keep him quiet, Levine said. Haynes told police he was taking out his garbage Tuesday evening when the dog began barking so he stabbed him with a spike he had made for that purpose, according to police reports.

The puppy, which required surgery, survived.

If convicted, Haynes could face one to three years in prison. Probation is also available.

He next appears in court on Nov. 15.
