Defense, prosecutors rest in bat attack trial
Both the prosecution and defense attorneys rested their case in the trial of a man accused in the 2010 baseball bat attack on two women.
Heriberto Viramontes is charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and aggravated battery for the attack on Stacy Jurich and Natasha McShane, an Irish exchange student. The attack in a Chicago viaduct left McShane unable to speak and walk.
The prosecutor’s case relies heavily on the testimony of Marcy Cruz, who admitted she was the getaway driver and testified against Viramontes. Lawyers for Viramontes called five Chicago police officers to cast doubt on the woman’s credibility.
Prosecutors also played recordings of Viramontes’ jailhouse telephone conversations, in which he said “I probably hit her once.” Viramontes refused to testify in his own defense.
Closing arguments are expected Thursday.
