No one but the cat is comfortable

My 20-by-12 living room, otherwise known as the “alley,” is a spectacular collection of lift chairs bought lovingly for my late husband, countless tables serving as the “office” to manage the medical bills, couches as old as my children and torch lights. What could be cooler than torch lights?

At 68, I’m ready to become a Golden Girl. Having a living room that allows actual humans to walk through, inspires my friends and children to stay longer and my cat to keep me company more easily, would mean the world to me.

I welcome you wholeheartedly into my home, Room For Living!

Ÿ Budget: $8,900 for furniture, excluding window treatments

One way to handle the “bowling effect” is to create three different spaces — a conversation area by the windows with a sofa and two accent chairs, a seating area in front of the fireplace with swivel chairs to interact with both ends of the room, and the last area of the office/storage area.

In this design, we have chosen a neutral sofa with patterned accent pillows, a coordinating cocktail table with storage and two accent chairs for the sofa area with a bold color, or a pattern. The desk area would have a desk-hutch combination and the swivel chairs by the fireplace could be used with a round ottoman or cocktail table.

For a finishing touch, add an area rug and tailored Roman shades for a window treatment.
