Libertyville takes third at Maine West
Libertyville’s girls volleyball team continues to play well as the state tournament approaches.
The Wildcats outlasted Batavia 22-25, 25-22, 30-28 to finish third in Maine West’s pumpkin invite Saturday. Libertyville defeated Downers Grove South (23-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Resurrection (25-22, 25-19) on Friday. The Wildcats then topped Maine South (25-18, 25-19) in the quarterfinals, before losing to Sandburg (25-16, 25-22) in the semifinals.
Alex Basler’s 42 kills, 19 digs, 10 blocks and 4 aces led Libertyville (19-10), which is seeded fourth in the Class 4A Conant sectional complex. The Wildcats, who finished fourth in the state last year, face either No. 13 Mundelein or No. 20 Wheeling in a regional semifinal at Waukegan on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Rhiannon Prentiss added 37 kills and 52 digs for Libertyville in the Maine West tourney, while Kate Jarecki of the Wildcats tallied 23 kills. Cassie Ostmeyer and Lizzie Apgar dished out 54 and 51 assists, respectively, and Morgan O Brien registered-82 digs and 6 aces. Vicky Liu had 39 digs and 15 aces.
Lake Zurich (25-4) lost two of three matches Saturday.
Batavia stunned the Bears 26-24, 17-25, 25-20, before Lake Zurich rebounded to defeat Maine South 20-25, 25-17, 25-20. Lockport then captured a 25-18, 26-24 decision over the Bears.
