Hundreds say thanks to retired EGHS administrator Rick Mirro

Students, staff, alumni, friends and family recently celebrated longtime Elk Grove High School administrator Rick Mirro’s outstanding service to the school and District 214.

Hundreds participated in the “Rick Mirro Night” celebration at the Friday, Sept. 20, home football game by donning fake mustaches and “Mirro Nation” shirts with his face on the front and his top 10 sayings on the back.

After serving 34 years in education and 29 years in District 214, Mirro announced his retirement this past summer as the assistant principal for student activities. It is a position he has held for 13 years.

Due to the announcement’s timing, neither students nor faculty were able to express their appreciation for his years of service.

“During Rick’s years at Elk Grove, he became the heart and soul of the school,” said Glenn Simon, associate principal of instruction. “He seemed to be everywhere at once, from early morning swim practices to late night soccer games. Year after year, Rick showed a passion for student involvement and enriched the lives of countless kids. For many Elk Grove High School alumni, Rick Mirro is as much a representation of the school as the Grenadier mascot. He will be missed as a teacher, friend and mentor.”

Mirro began his education career as a physical education instructor at Barrington High School in 1979. He also taught at Forest View High School and Elk Grove High School before joining the administration as temporary division head for physical education, drivers education, and health education in 1996. He also taught and served at Rolling Meadows High School as athletic director of men’s interscholastic athletics before his appointment to assistant principal for student activities at Elk Grove High School.
