Great Fall Happenings
(Buffalo Grove) Saturday, Oct. 14, 2013 was an almost perfect fall day. Bright sun filled the sky, a cool crisp fall breeze and the sounds of cheering fans. The Saint Mary Bison celebrated their 44th annual homecoming on their football field at Lake Cook Road and Buffalo Grove Rd.
The spirit of homecoming is an annual school and community event at Saint Mary School. From the youngest baby bison to the many grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers and neighbors that come to watch the cheerleaders and cheer the football teams onto victory. The homecoming festivities began on Friday starting with a school Pep Rally and ending with the junior high homecoming dance. Saturday began with the annual Pancake Breakfast. Many thanks to the Continental Restaurant, Buffalo Grove, for donating pancake batter and sausages! After a hearty breakfast teams took to the field.
The Flag teams, made up of boys and girls in 3rd & 4th grades kicked-off the morning. Our fans “in training” Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st & 2nd graders rode their decorated spirited bicycles around the field just before the JV started their game. Even the honorary “Baby Bison” Colton, 8 months old came out along with his alumni mom Jennifer to cheer on the Saint Mary Bison teams. Many alumni along with multiple family generations attended the games. “Homecoming gives me a real sense of community. It's a wonderful time, seeing all the families, even the ones that don't have cheerleaders or players. The school makes everyone feel so welcome and all the children have a part to play, even the youngest preschoolers. My children look forward to homecoming each year and get excited about the week at school” according to Lisa Schwabe who has 4 children at Saint Mary in 1st through 7th grades.
The 5th & 6th grade cheerleaders brought on the Junior Varsity team. It was a tough game against Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) but the JV came out ahead winning 20 to12. The varsity cheerleaders cheered on to no avail. The Varsity team played well but could not overcome Lake Forest Country Day School's varsity team. Even with a varsity loss it was an exciting game, lots of school spirit and pride and wonderful sportsmanship. Saint Mary JV and Varsity teams have weekly football games through October. GO Bison.
