Bicyclist killed in collision with Metra train in Mount Prospect
A 95-year-old bicyclist died Wednesday after being struck by an eastbound train on the Union Pacific Northwest Line in Mount Prospect, police said.
The collision involved train 622, which departed Barrington at 7:27 a.m. and was due into the Mount Prospect station at 7:50 a.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.
Mount Prospect police officer Greg Sill said the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, lived in Mount Prospect. He was identified as Reginald Gaetz by a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Gaetz was riding his bicycle on Central Road and attempted to cross the railroad tracks at the Central Road crossing while the gates were down and warning lights were flashing, police said.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
The collision caused long delays for inbound and outbound trains, putting some up to two hours behind schedule, according to the Metra website.
