Mt. Prospect golf outing aids Ghanaian orphans

A Better Life for Kids will host its second annual “Golf for Ghana’s Orphans,” a charity golf event beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Mount Prospect Golf Club, 600 S. See-Gwun Ave., to support the most destitute children in Ghana. All profits will go directly to feed, educate and care for infants and children at Ghanaian orphanages.

“These children live without basic resources, such as three meals a day and a free, public education, things we take for granted in the States,” said Shelley Reese, founder and executive director of the not for profit group.

On a trip to a Ghanaian orphanage in 2006, Reese, a second grade teacher in Skokie, was struck by the poverty and lack of resources she witnessed. That led her to start an educational fund in Ghana, visit the orphanage annually, and launch A Better Life for Kids in 2011.
