Guerin College Prep hosts open house for prospective students

Guerin College Preparatory High School, a Catholic, co-educational college preparatory school, invites prospective high school students and their families to visit the school during Open Houses scheduled on October 20 and November 25.

Guerin Prep, situated on a 23-acre, wireless campus in River Grove on Chicago's northwest side, serves approximately 450 students from Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The school boasts a 1:12 teacher to student ratio and a 100 percent college acceptance rate. Guerin Prep is structured to meet the individual strengths and needs of each student. The curriculum includes three rigorous academic programs of study (Sullivan College Preparatory Program, Providence College Preparatory Program and the advanced Nolan Scholar Program), as well as an advanced placement program for students. Additionally, Guerin Prep is a technology-centered high school. Each student is provided with a state-of-the-art laptop or tablet equipped with digital textbooks and the Windows 8 operating system.

Guerin's Open House is a unique experience in which parents and students are separated, allowing Guerin to customize the tour to meet individual concerns and interests. The parents meet with Karen Booth, Principal, and Steve Baldwin, President, to learn about the core curriculum, school experience, admission requirements, tuition, and financial aid. Students participate in five-minute classes to experience what a school day is like at Guerin.

Open Houses are scheduled for:

Sunday, October 20

11 a.m. - 2 p.m. (Last tour at 1 p.m.)

Monday, November 25

6 p.m. - 8 p.m. (Last tour at 7 p.m.)

In 2013, Guerin graduates were collectively awarded more than $5 million in college scholarships. Among the students who received scholarships were Anisa Bravo, who received a full scholarship to University of Illinois at Chicago to study medicine; Agnes Galej, who was awarded a substantial scholarship to Yale University to study medicine; and Kristof Ifkovits, who received a competitive Division 1 FBS Athletic Scholarship to play football for Western Michigan University.

“We encourage all families who are seeking a solid high school educational experience to visit Guerin,” said Steve Baldwin, President of Guerin Prep. “We continue to see consistent growth at Guerin Prep each year, and our graduates have gone on to more than 100 universities and colleges including Yale, Notre Dame, and Michigan State. Yet we've continued to maintain the balance between a highly academic education and a value-based experience,” he added.

Beyond academics, students participate in a four-year theology program and can also choose from a variety of programs including: band, strings, piano, choir, theatre, dance, photography, drawing, design, and ceramics. Guerin offers a variety of interscholastic sports teams for both boys and girls, including: softball, basketball, track, hockey, cross country, and wrestling. It also has an athletic center with a weight room, two full-sized gyms, and a wrestling room. There are more than 30 academic, arts, leadership, and honor society clubs.

Guerin's History

Guerin College Preparatory High School was established in 2004. The school sits on the campus of its founding schools, Holy Cross High School for boys and Mother Theodore Guerin High School for girls. The founding schools were opened in 1961 and 1962, respectively. The Brothers of Holy Cross and Sisters of Providence ran each school separately, but with shared values and traditions. Today, Guerin Prep benefits from the combined rich histories of its founding schools, and continues to instill the same values in its students. The high school sits on 23 acres at the corner of 80th and Belmont in River Grove. Nearly 20,000 students from Northwest Chicago and the surrounding suburbs have graduated from the schools in the past 50 years.
