Raising Awareness, Raising Spirits, Raising Hope 5K Walk for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

On Saturday, September 28, 2013, the Darien-Woodridge Firefighters Local 3437 and area residents will team up with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® in the fight against childhood cancer. The “Raising Awareness, Raising Spirits, Raising Hope” 5K Walk is an event to give area residents the opportunity to help support the lifesaving mission of one of the world's premier pediatric cancer research centers. To be held on September 28, 2013 at Oldfield Oaks Forest Preserve and Meyer Woods Park, the event will be at 10:00 a.m.

The event encourages families to attend, as there will be a variety of food, activities and fun for all ages, including such things as a firefighter obstacle course, fire trucks and ambulances for the kids to explore, and a stand with root beer floats and ice cream sundaes. Chicago Sports Legends will be hosting a silent auction of Chicago sports memorabilia. And all registered walkers will be eligible to win numerous giveaways, including restaurant gift cards, hotel stays, golf passes and other great gifts.

“We are excited to help raise awareness and funds to support the mission of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is to find cures and save children,” said Shawn Lamb, event coordinator. “The Raising Awareness, Raising Spirits, Raising Hope 5K Walk will truly make a difference in helping the children of St. Jude fight cancer and other deadly diseases.”

Since opening in 1962, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. No child is ever denied treatment because of a family's inability to pay. With a daily operating cost of $1.7 million, St. Jude depends mostly on public contributions and fundraising events, like “Raising Awareness, Raising Spirits, Raising Hope” 5K Walk.

“Raising Awareness, Raising Spirits, Raising Hope” 5K Walk is sponsored by Darien-Woodridge Firefighters Local 3437.
