School moves to teach problem solving

Saint Mary School Buffalo Grove is pleased to announce their new S.T.E.M. curriculum and lab. S.T.E.M. is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. S.T.E.M. curriculum focuses on these subjects to help children gain the skills required to succeed in today's challenging world. This includes the ability to think critically, solve complex problems, and drive advancements in science and technology.

S.T.E.M. initiatives are not science, technology, engineering and mathematics in isolation. Rather S.T.E.M. curriculum includes and connects all subject areas – science, math, language arts, social studies, as well as art, and music. Students use exploration, discovery and problem solving and learn to see all knowledge as connected, rather than artificially separated into individual disciplines. 21st century skills such as critical thinking and problem solving, collaboration and communication, project and resource management, creativity and adaptability are increasingly necessary for students to succeed in the future. S.T.E.M. blends these skills with academic content is a uniquely effective way to enhance student performance.

Saint Mary parents raised funds over the last 2 years at their annual Jingle Jubilee. The funds were used to build the new lab and purchase S.T.E. M curriculum. The Saint Mary S.T.E.M. curriculum is being directed by newly hired Deborah Larsen. This curriculum is in addition to the math and science curriculums already very successful at the school.
