Kline Creek Farm offers old-fashioned Country Fair
Farming fans and history buffs of all ages are invited to DuPage County Forest Preserve District’s annual old-fashioned Country Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1, at Kline Creek Farm at 1N600 County Farm Road, West Chicago.
Visitors to the free 1890s-themed event will experience the excitement of unusual exhibitors from far and wide. They’ll thrill to the acrobatic juggling of the Amazing Budabi Brothers at 10:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m., and delight at Professor Marvel’s Amazing Flea Circus at 11:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. They’ll gaze in awe as world-champion gun spinner Garret Popek flashes the legendary skills of the Wild West at noon and 2:30 p.m., and ponder artifacts and oddities at Dr. Jack MacRae’s Tent of Wonders at 12:45 and 3:15 p.m. Throughout the day, they also can compete for ribbons, play games, admire homemade pies and preserves, see award-winning livestock, and hop on horse-drawn hay wagon rides.
In the 1890s, a community fair was a highly anticipated event for farm families. They could learn about innovations in farming equipment and see demonstrations of new home technologies such as telephones and electric lights. A fair also was a social occasion where hundreds could compete for prizes and enjoy a taste of adventure.
