Boomers extend lead to 4

MARION, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers extended their lead in the Frontier League’s West Division to 4 games by outlasting the Southern Illinois Miners 7-6 on the road Wednesday night.

The Boomers never trailed but failed to hold a 6-2 lead late before an RBI single from Sean Mahley in the ninth put the team in front for good.

Alexi Colon helped Schaumburg build the lead by accounting for 4 runs. Colon tripled home runs in the third and fifth, eventually scoring in both innings as well.

Southern Illinois evened the game with 4 runs in the seventh, but the Boomers rallied against the sixth Southern Illinois pitcher to secure the win. Schaumburg drew 10 walks.

Tony Delmonico threw a season-high 5 innings, allowing just 1 run and leaving with the lead. The righty struck out a season-high four.

Clark Labitan earned the win despite blowing the save. Dexter Price finished off the win by stranding the tying run at second in the ninth. Colon, Jordan Dean, and Gerard Hall posted 2 hits each. Hall drove home 3 runs.

The Boomers (50-33) are tied for the top record in the league with 13 games remaining and will continue the trip with the rubber match at Southern Illinois on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Shawn Sanford (8-5, 3.02) will make his debut after being acquired at the transaction deadline Monday. Southern Illinois counters with righty Brett Kennedy (1-0, 3.86).
