Boomers lose but maintain lead

MARION, Ill. — Despite a 4-0 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners in the opener of a key six-game road trip, the Schaumburg Boomers remained 3 games ahead in the Frontier League’s West Division.

Schaumburg managed just 2 hits as three Southern Illinois pitchers combined on the shutout. Starter Preston Vancil took a no-hitter into the sixth before a single from Alexi Colon.

The Miners gave Vancil all the run support needed in the first inning with 3 runs. Mike Giovenco battled through 6 innings for the Boomers, allowing just the 3 first-inning runs to take the loss.

Sean Mahley registered the other hit for Schaumburg, which drew 4 walks.

The Boomers (49-33) continue the trip with the second game at Southern Illinois on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Tony Delmonico (0-1, 6.86) starts for the Boomers opposite righty Travis Bradshaw (3-0, 2.75).

Schaumburg returns home Aug. 27 for a three-game set.
